Quick Tips
 | There are only four drugs in two classes of generics
approved for pain relief OTC
 | Acetaminophen
 | Tylenol |
|
 | NSAIDS (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs)
 | Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Aspirin |
|
|
 | Manufacturers will often package these drugs with different
name variations but they are all the same exact drug. |
 | "PM" forms of these drugs simply have the antihistamine
diphenhydramine (i.e. Benadryl) added to them
 | Antihistamines make many people very sleepy. If you want the "PM" effect
consider buying generic diphenhydramine and use with your pain pill of
choice on an as needed basis. |
|
All of these drugs are similar in that they relieve pain and reduce fever.
The main difference is that acetaminophen has no anti inflammatory properties
but the NSAIDS do. This property can be useful when treating pains with a strong
inflammatory component such as arthritis, injuries, post operative pain,
toothaches, etc .Among the NSAIDS aspirin has less anti inflammatory properties
than ibuprofen and naproxen.
